Location

Geographically, Ba Be National Park is situated in Bac Kan province in northeastern Vietnam. Its primary purpose is to protect Ba Be Lake and the surrounding lowland limestone forests. The park lies approximately 240 km northwest of Hanoi.

Ba Be Lake

The name "Ba Be" translates to "Three Lakes," although they actually form a single water body. The lake stretches 8 km in length, about 400 m in width, and reaches a maximum depth of 35 m. It is surrounded by limestone mountain ranges with numerous caves and underground streams.

Flora and Fauna

Ecotourism enthusiasts will find ideal conditions here due to the park’s rich and unique biodiversity. The vegetation mainly consists of limestone and evergreen forests. Approximately 417 plant species have been recorded, including an endemic bamboo species that climbs the hillsides. The park’s fauna includes 600 animal species, 66 of which are rare and listed in Vietnam’s Red Book.

Scenic Attractions

Must-visit sites in Ba Be National Park include:

  • Puong Cave: A boat journey along the Nang River takes you through this massive cave (30 meters high, 300 meters long), home to thousands of bats from 18 different species.
  • Nang River: After emerging from the cave, the river flows at the base of towering mountains, creating spectacular cascades between vertical rock formations.
  • Ao Tien Lake: A small mountain-top lake filled with crystal-clear water filtered through limestone. According to legend, fairies once bathed here.

The park was established to protect ecosystems, rare species, and landscapes while promoting sustainable resource use. It also supports local communities by improving living conditions and reducing pressure on biodiversity.
